BEHAVIOR THERAPY (NATURALISTIC)

Behavior Therapy (Naturalistic)

What is ABA?

Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior and how behaviors are affected by the environment. ABA therapy uses behavior analytic methods to change, replace and shape behaviors. ABA Therapy is commonly recommended to children who are diagnosed with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to build adaptive behaviors and help them learn skills.

The outcomes of ABA therapy includes:

  • Teach and encourage appropriate behaviours
  • Replacing inappropriate behaviors with appropriate coping skills
  • Learning and academic skills
  • Language and communication
  • Social skills
  • Compliance
  • Attention and focus
  • Motor skills
  • Eye Contact

What is NATURALISTIC Teaching?

The naturalistic teaching is rooted in many of the same behavioral principals in ABA. However, it focuses more on the unique experiences of the individual child. Using a very personalized approach, the therapist uses the child’s daily activities and routines to dictate the progress of the session. Such approaches allows the therapist to focus on very specific target behaviors associated with the factors that contributes to the behaviors.

Sessions are less structured compared to the classical ABA as it allows the child to take control over the toys and activities they choose. By following the child’s lead, the therapist will be able to create multiple opportunities for practice in a way that is meaningful and easier for the skills to be generalised.

ABA is certainly effective in increasing a child’s adaptive behaviors. However, the clinical setting and structure can also make it difficult for the skills to translate into the child’s everyday environment. Critics also worry that ABA alone isn’t always the best method to build language and communication skills. Hence, using a naturalistic method with ABA creates opportunities for generalised learning, where the children can apply their newly acquired skills to their daily routines. The naturalistic approach can also be applied throughout the day which creates endless opportunities to help the children make greater improvements.

At Therapy Kidz, we provide behavior therapy using both the ABA and Naturalistic approach to bring out the best of each child. Contact us today to book an appointment with us.
